Can our economy survive high oil prices?
With oil prices hitting record highs, questions are being asked as to how long the global economy can survive the rising cost of one of its most fundamental resources. Are low oil prices necessary for prosperity or will the high price of oil force economies to diversify their energy supply and address the issues of global warming?
Professor Andrew Oswald is an expert on the economics of Oil and its influence on global trade and employment.........

Fuel Cells Savings
We've gone on the record saying fuel cells are at least 20 years away. But when will that make a big difference in our use of gasoline? A long, long time:
"The potential for hydrogen fuel cells having an impact that you'd notice is a long way away," says John Heywood, professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. The estimates assume that competitive fuel cell vehicles will be available within 15 years, an achievement that will require improvements, for example, in hydrogen storage and production and fuel-cell costs. But even if and when fuel-cell vehicles come with the price and performance that consumers want, it will still take decades more before such new vehicles work their way into widespread use.
MIT is talking 60 years in regards to gasoline usage and nasty emissions before hydrogen makes a big enough difference for any of us to benefit from. So what to do?
Use less of the stuff. But MIT knows that's not the American way:
Heywood admits these ideas might not be rapidly adopted: "It's not American to conserve. We seem to have drifted into that attitude. Our culture doesn't bring us up to think about conserving. It brings us up to think about consuming".
We are totally diggin' the new subcompacts from the big 3 of Japan and are honestly hoping our big 2.5 from home announce competitors to those vehicles rather than announcing more of the same.........

MyCessPit
Good lordy, the way MySpace is sometimes portrayed you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was hell on earth - sucking in the world's bogeymen like a black hole. This week's Economist reports that it's where paedophiles spend their lives grooming the underage, al-Qaeda communicate plans about world domination, Playboy recruit topless models and - prepare yourself - teenagers are rude about their teachers! Luckily, the advertising community are making themselves available to steer brands through this quagmire of filth.
David Cohen, a grand fromage at Universal McCann says he, "wouldn't be caught dead in that kind of environment". Mystifyingly, he goes onto say that when he does recommend it, he tells clients to stick to the bits that News Corporation have built and not to go anywhere near the, "unpredictable, user-generated, content". (Presumably because that's where the terrorists, paedophiles and Hugh Hefner hang out). Furthermore, Cohen says.
if he really, really, really has to use it, then he has negotiated a way for his clients to get out very quickly in case something unspeakable happens. "We can be out of there in a heartbeat", he says before going onto clarify that he actually means two days. (Nice one Dave, what could possibly happen in 48 hours on one of the world's largest networked communities). Anyway, that's much quicker than the normal two weeks it takes advertisers who have stumbled into MyCessPit without the expert guidance of Mr Cohen. Phew! Meanwhile, the tiny proportion of MySpace residents who aren't axe-wielding psychopaths go ahead organising political campaigns to stop legislation about immigration that they feel is a bit unfair. But, let's face it, they're probably up to something horribly, evil really. ;-).........

Kaleidescape Entertainment Server
What really gets me is that when you click on a movie, it starts instantly where you want it to.....no fooling with a disk, no previews, no FBI warning. That's luxurious. Of course it's cool as hell to have your entire DVD collection organized by cover art, actors, genre, etc. Pick one of those films above and all the other covers will dance around for a moment, then show you the movies most like your pick.
The brawn behind all this is the Kaleidescape Entertainment Server with twelve 400 meg hard drives able to hold, and back up, 660 full res DVDs (or 6,000 CDs, and you can chain on more servers as needed). The brains is a reader that hooks via Internet to Kaleidescape's master database of cover art, categories, and the bookmarks that start the movie just so. Ethernet sends the goods to as a number of as 25 players around the boat. These babies are becoming quite popular on megayachts. Perfect accessory: a huge Crestron touch screen remote. The whole deal, preferably enjoyed on a sky lounge off the Italian Riviera, almost makes a guy want to be filthy rich.........

Crockey
Crockey, as per the eponymous Wikipedia, is a baseball-like game in which everyone has a bat. The field is marked as illustrated. In addition, "there is the Crock" - "a regular softball encased in foam padding and wrapped in several layers of duct tape. A Nerf-type foam is typically used to pad the ball, and this is accomplished by slicing the foam ball in half, coring it to the size of the softball, and reassembling it around the softball with duct tape." (hence, our junktropic interest). On the only other Crockey-specific site I could find, I also learned the following:
"Crockey is much like volleyball or tennis. The ball is propelled back and forth across the midlines by each team. Each player may use a bat and other methods to propel the ball. If a team fails to return the ball to the other side, the other team scores one point".
and "In the game of crockey, having fun is the primary object. Winning is secondary, so let the younger players have a chance to have fun. Rotating gives every player a chance to play a different position".
Crockey bears all the marks of true, Junk-enabled fun. Hence, we hereby grant the title of Junkmaster to the game's inventors, Joshua and Josiah Inman of Seaman, Ohio. We thank you, Junkmasters Joshua and Josiah, for this gift of junkly fun.........

Desire To Win Brought Favre Back
The decision Brett Favre made to return to Green Bay this season wasn't easy, but it was rather simple.
"Ultimately I still wanted to play, I still felt like I could help this team win," Favre said. "I wondered what it would be like at home on Sundays next year and saying I could be doing that, I could be helping that team.
"Regardless of what decision I made, there will be regrets at times".
On the field inside the Don Hutson Center Friday, Favre began his 16th NFL campaign throwing completion after completion, moving in and out of the pocket and seemingly enjoying the nearly two-hour practice.........
